11/23/25 SERMON NOTES 1THESSALONIANS - WEEK5 | Tyler Kirby

Psalm 115:1 NLT “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name goes all the glory…”

1John 4:4 NLT “the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Joshua 1:9 NIV “Be strong and courageous…for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

1Thessalonians 4 NIV “1As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God…

How do we please God?

Right thinking

Romans 8:6-8 NLT “6So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. 8That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.”

Exercising faith

Hebrews 11:6 NIV “And without faith it is impossible to please God…”

“faith” - to believe to the extent of complete trust and reliance.

Faith is trusting God at His word…even when it doesn’t make sense to us

Spiritual growth

Colossians 1:10-14 NIV “10so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light. 13For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

1Thessalonians 4 NIV "1…Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified:

‘sanctified’ - being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus

that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control your own body a in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.”

1Cor.6:18 NIV “Flee from sexual immorality…”

Ephesians 5:3 NIV “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.”

Sexual activity of any kind outside of your marriage is sexual immorality and a sin against God.

What does sexual immorality include?

-Sex before marriage

-Adultery

Matt.5:27-28 NIV “27You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

-Pornography / sexual fantasy

-Swinging / Polygamy

-Pedophilia

-Homosexuality / Lesbianism

Romans 1:24-27 NLT “24So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator Himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! 26That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.”

1Cor.6:9-10 NLT “9…Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people - none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.”

1Cor.6:11 NLT “Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

1Thessalonians 4 NIV  9Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. 10And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, 11and to make it your ambition…

‘ambition’ - to accomplish something through hard work and determination

…to lead a quiet life:

‘quiet life’ - live with humility & contentment…drop the drama

…You should mind your own business

Means avoid gossip or meddling in others business

…and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.”
